Abstract In this paper, an unsupervised change-detection approach was proposed to detect new urban areas from multi-temporal SAR images. The novelty of the proposed approach is the joint use of coherence and intensity characteristics of SAR imagery. The approach involves two main steps: (a) the extraction of difference feature containing information on changed areas, and (b) the unsupervised two-dimensional (2D) thresholding. First, two difference features based on the concepts of long-term coherence and backscattering temporal variability are extracted from a series of multitemporal SAR images. Then, the resulting features that represent the INSAR signal temporal variability of changed areas are merged, and a 2D thresholding technique based on the maximum 2D Renyi’s entropy criterion is developed to obtain the change-detection results. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is confirmed with experimental results obtained from a set of six ERS-1/2 SLC SAR images acquired in Shanghai, China.

Urban Change Detection Using Coherence and Intensity Characteristics of Multi-temporal ERS-1/2 Imagery
In this paper, the potential of multitemporal ERS-1/2 InSAR data for detecting urban land-cover changes is investigated on a test area within Shanghai city, China. A new unsupervised change-detection approach is proposed, which is characterized by the combined use of two temporal variations based on backscattering intensity and long-term coherence from multitemporal ERS-1/2 SAR images. The prop...

SAR change detection performance using coherent change detection (CCD) and non-coherent change detection (NCCD) algorithms is demonstrated using high-resolution synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery gathered by the General Dynamics Data Collection System. CCD performance comparisons using phaseonly imagery versus complex (amplitude and phase) imagery are also presented. A new image quality met...

متن کاملChange Detection in Urban Area Using Decision Level Fusion of Change Maps Extracted from Optic and SAR Images
The last few decades witnessed high urban growth rates in many countries. Urban growth can be mapped and measured by using remote sensing data and techniques along with several statistical measures. The purpose of this research is to detect the urban change that is used for urban planning. Change detection using remote sensing images can be classified into three methods: algebra-based, transfor...
متن کاملMonitoring Urban Areas by Means of Coherence Levels
Urban areas studies by means of C-band satellite SAR imagery has not provided relevant information while the use of InSAR has shown that it is possible to detect urban settlements with rather good accuracy. In this study we have analysed the potential benefits connected with the combination of four SAR and InSAR signatures (short and long term coherence, backscatter and intensity texture) for u...
